Casting Lessons


Sportsman's Finest offers fly casting lessons for beginners and all other experience levels. Whether you are just starting in the sport of fly fishing, wanting to learn a new technique, or need diagnostic help with a casting problem, a Sportsman’s Finest FFF Certified Casting Instructor can provide the guidance and diagnosis you need to be a successful fly caster.

For all instruction: equipment is provided, if necessary; lessons are conducted outside at the Sportsman’s Finest Casting Pond - students should dress appropriately for the weather and bring something to drink; and instruction conducted as weather permits.

All instruction is by appointment only.  Please call to make an appointment - we can accommodate almost any schedule.  Instruction time can be scheduled as early as 7:00am and to start as late as 2 hours before dark (seasons and daylight permitting.)

 Basic Fly Casting Lesson

For Beginners: focus is on the fundamentals of fly casting and basic line management, including energy development, accuracy, and efficiency.   Students move through a series of exercises to build skills and diagnostic understanding of their fly casting.  Instruction topics includes: basic equipment; basic overhead and roll cast; basic line management; and recognition of good and bad casts.

·        Private, 2 hours = $100

·        2 Persons, 2 hours = $75 each (Both students must be at the same experience level.)

·        3 + Persons = call for rate and time frame (All students must be at the same experience level.) 

 Specific Skills Lesson

For a student wanting to learn or improve certain fly casting and fishing skills, such as the double haul; line shooting; distance casting; casting in windy conditions; fishing with a sinking line; and eliminating a tailing loop. These and other skills can be developed in a single hour of instruction (or more).

·        Private, $50 per hour (minimum 1 hour) 

·        2 Persons = $35 per person, per hour (minimum 1 hour)

·        3 + Persons = call for rate and time frame 

“Diagnosing Your Cast” Lesson

Is something is just not right with your cast…a funny shaped loop; can’t get the fly to land where you want; not enough line speed to cast the distance you want; your double haul is more like a double dribble…? In this class, students learn to examine, analyze, diagnose, and correct many of life’s little fly casting issues.  Students are evaluated and participate in analysis and diagnostic exercises.  Proper (and improper) casting fundamentals and techniques are reviewed.  Students need some casting experience.

·        Private = $50 per hour (minimum 1 hour)

·        2 Persons = $35 per person, per hour (minimum 1 hour)

·        3 + Persons = call for rate and time frame 

“Ready-Set-Go” Saltwater Skills Lesson

For a fly fisher preparing to fish or be guided on the saltwater flats. Fly fishing in saltwater usually requires making quick decisions and being efficient in presenting the fly. This lesson helps prepare the angler for fly fishing in this demanding environment.  Creative exercises are utilized to simulate the on-the-water experience.  Skills development can include: the double haul; improving distance and accuracy; fly presentation; target practice; the ready position; casting to tailing and cruising fish; line management; and wind casting, plus more.  Participants need basic casting, line management, and loop formation skills.
